About the Championship

School SCRABBLE® has been a popular competitive activity in the United States since 1998, when the National SCRABBLE Association and its community of Scrabble tournament enthusiasts adapted the game for school-age children. It has grown since then to the point where the annual U.S. National School SCRABBLE Championship attracts about 100 players, and is televised on ESPN. Its success in the classroom draws on the wide range of literacy and numeracy skills necessary to master the game, the social skills fostered by two-player team play, and the opportunity for children to measure those skills in safe competition.

This year for the first time, the parents and teachers who belong to the Toronto SCRABBLE Club (the largest and oldest SCRABBLE club in North America) have decided to help promote SCRABBLE in Toronto-area schools by organising a Toronto School SCRABBLE Championship.

If your school does not already have a School SCRABBLE Club, it’s easy to set one up, and we’ll help you. You can find a lot of resources online by clicking on the NSA School SCRABBLE link at the top of this page; and we can also match you up with one of our volunteers who can offer a series of Scrabble lessons for your class or club, or to teach the basics of the game. If you’re interested in this, please contact Vera Bigall at Bessborough School, (416) 396-2315.

Find out which of your students are interested in representing your school at the Championship, and be sure to send in their registration before the March 25th deadline.

On the day of the event, please arrive between 10:00 A.M. and 10:20 A.M., so that we can be sure that everyone is present in time for the start of the first round. If you are delayed en route, please call John Chew at his cellphone, (416) 876-7675. Players must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and must bring their own bagged lunches to eat during the half-hour lunch break. All playing equipment will be provided, including boards, tiles, tile bags, racks, timers, pencil and paper.

Persons, businesses or organisations interested in sponsoring the Championship should contact organizing committee member John Chew at or (416) 876-7675.
